Our world famous chicken restaurant brand all started with one cook, Colonel Harland Sanders, who created a finger lickin' good recipe more than 75 years ago, a list of secret herbs and spices scratched out on the back of the door to his kitchen. He started travelling by car to different restaurants and cooked his fried chicken on the spot for restaurant owners. He did this at the age of 65. If the owner liked the chicken, they would enter into a handshake agreement to sell the Colonel's chicken. Legend has it that Colonel Sanders heard 1009 "No's" before he heard his first yes. KFC are on the lookout for a brilliant SENIOR PRESS OFFICER & PR MANAGER (and lover of fried chicken!)
You'll be joining a phenomenal team (if we do say so ourselves!). We've won awards, we've generated loads of coverage, and top it all off, we've expertly handled some of the biggest brand crises that our sector has ever faced - including the chicken crisis... that time we ran out of chicken across the country back in 2018... 'FCK'!
So, if you love a meaty issue, can steadily and calmly handle a crisis, have innate media prowess, and you care about the role of business in society... this is the role for you! We are on the lookout for an expert media guru who is passionate about using earned to protect and promote KFC's reputation, and who has the expertise to recognise how vital reputation is to a brand's ability to grow and thrive.
You'll be the Colonel in charge of effortlessly managing our busy press office, which is run via our PR agency and handles up to 40 different media enquiries a week. You'll also work with our masterful social media team and our incredible Care Squad to help catch any PR issues (...ideally before they become a PR issue!). From the Guardian through to the Daily Mail, you'll also be ready to turn on a dime in managing all sorts of issues - from HFSS and the obesity debate, through to supply chain and sustainable farming. You will use your solid media intuition and creative spark to respond distinctively, spot the right opportunities instinctively, and execute media strategies brilliantly.
This is a huge opportunity for someone who wants to make an impact and influence with media for a brand that's firmly part of UK culture, and in a sector that's at the heart of media and stakeholder debate. That's why you'll work closely with our Head of Sustainability, our Senior Public Affairs Manager, and our Brand Good team to proactively lead in bringing to life our commitments to being a responsible business, through media relations and other tactics. It's in our DNA to do the right thing and make a positive difference to the communities we serve, so you'll be passionate about helping us shape impactful comms and media strategies around areas like nutrition, sustainability, animal welfare and social purpose - and in a truly KFC way.
You'll report into the Senior Reputation Manager (the legit Chicken Connoisseur) and sit as part of our Reputation and Responsibility team (R&R). The R&R team is a new team at KFC tasked with a huge job: to drive radical business change and dramatically shift perceptions of the brand amongst media, stakeholders and consumers. WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Delivering brilliant, brand-building proactive press coverage! You'll drive news generation and earned media campaigns centred around bringing to life our commitments to being a responsible business in an engaging way, through media relations and other tactics
You'll be able to pull together exciting media briefs whilst also sensing when great PR opportunities appear - and be proactive in taking full advantage of them
You'll be the first point of contact for the press office team (run via our PR agency) - helping to develop, craft and approve media statements in our distinctive voice
You'll have the know-how and experience to expertly manage media crises and manage and monitor issues
You'll need to be on the ball with monitoring social media and customer care to help us spot potential issues. We want to find someone with a natural instinct (a sixth sense, if you will) for scenario planning and anticipating what journalists are likely to ask us next.
As you can imagine, issues and opportunities don't always present themselves between 9am and 5pm (as much as we wish they would!) - so we're looking for someone who's willing go the extra mile outside of these hours (within reason!).
You'll develop and maintain strong relationships with other departments in the business, and key individuals and teams at our various partner agencies.
As part of the wider KFC team, you'll get a great insight into the broader world of KFC, and have amazing access to work closely with our industry-leading partner agencies (...and probably get invited to a few chicken tasting sessions here and there!)
WHAT WE'D LOVE FROM YOU:
You'll know what you're doing! We're looking for great prior media relations experience (either in-house or agency side) looking after and working as part of a busy press office - able to write brilliant press materials, talk to journalists and sell in stories.
Top-notch copywriting skills are absolutely essential. We want someone with a versatile writing style, who is able to adapt fluently to our distinctive, irreverent brand tone-of-voice with flawless grammar, spelling and punctuation.
You'll have a passion for responsibility comms and you will have experience in managing responsibility and reputation issues effortlessly
Ready for a long list? Because we're also looking for: creativity and imagination, a sharp eye for detail, an ability to prioritise, work in a team, deal with feedback, see the bigger picture and stay calm under pressure.
It's a team sport, so you'll build strong, effective relationships cross functionally. We want a total team player mentality and a drive to get things done. You'll need to manage internal and external relationships with key stakeholders - so goes without saying you'll be able to demonstrate superb communication skills. So basically love a good natter.

We're looking for personality with a big passion for press and with a natural media instinct. Great judgment mixed with maturity, flexibility and resilience are the key qualities we're after.
Enthusiasm is a must! A mild inclination towards poultry might help too.
