Job description

The directorate of UK Maritime Services (UKMS) is part of the MCA and is responsible for the survey and inspection of UK ships and foreign flagged vessels in UK waters as well as the promotion and implementation of UK safety, environmental and navigational regulatory regimes, development & implementation of policy in relation to competency standards, Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), officer certification, safe manning, radio training & SMarT; promoting the health and safety of seafarers by providing for seafarer medical examinations and by supporting safe working practices on board ship.

Seafarer Services Section helps to meet the Government's maritime strategy for 'Safer Ships and Cleaner Seas' by ensuring high standards of marine safety and marine environmental protection through delivery of policy, legislation and associated guidance within the areas of Seafarer Safety and Health, and Seafarer Training and Certification. These branches deal with the health requirements for seafarers on all UK ships and the skills and qualifications of all seafarers working on UK vessels (including Merchant Navy, Fishing Fleets, Inland Waterways, Large Yachts, Tugs and Workboats).

This role involves the management of a customer-facing team in UK Seafarer Services Training & Certification and also involves some branch-wide management responsibilities. The branch aims to deliver a high level of customer service by ensuring that certificates issued to seafarers comply with the relevant legislative requirements, are issued accurately within the time frame of our service level agreements.

This role will be based in Southampton HQ. There will be a business requirement for post holder to be based in the office for a set number of days per week. At present we are operating a hybrid working approach due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation. Details of this arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to

- Effective management of about 30 team members, including tasking, training, objective setting, performance appraisal, welfare and development of staff in the certification teams

- Delivering all Service Standards and Business Plan targets

- Producing of monthly reports on branch activities, specifically including quality and productivity statistics and reporting these as required

- Acting as the Customer Service Champion; responsible for promoting, ensuring and monitoring that good customer service is practiced across all certification teams

- Ensuring all certificates issued by the team comply with the relevant legislative requirements, are issued accurately and within the time frame of our service level agreements

About you

To be successful, you will need to be someone who has experience of working with regulatory frameworks. Being able to comply with relevant legislative requirements, ensuring that work is completed within a timely manner and to a high standard.

You will have exceptional line management capabilities, being able to support colleagues and members of staff through challenging times whilst remaining professional to ensure your team and the business meets its objectives.

You have experience of working within a customer service environment, acting as a customer service champion and ensuring that a good service is always provided to customers.
